10 pieces from Vadym Titarev, the winner of Kyiv Battle 2017 tournament in the category amateurs

Vadym can’t imagine his life without sport - this is his job...

Vadym can’t imagine his life without sport – this is his job, his hobby, rest and  delight for his soul. He started doing sports when he was young and now he has a lot of sports achievements: Vadym Titarev is Candidate Master of Sports in freestyle wrestling, has sports ranks in swimming and weightlifting. Now he works as a coach at the VIRTUS sports club  in Sumy.

As Vadym confessed, CrossFit gives him a chance to be well-developed and its dynamic workouts make him feel like the sky is the limit.  He says that CrossFit is an interesting, fun and complex sport that forms willpower, disciplines, lets you understand that you can do more than you think. What is important, it gives you a community of like-minded people.

Vadym took up crossfit in the August of 2015, and in 2017 he won the international tournament Kyiv Battle 2017 in the category amateurs.

Even though Titarev has had a lot of injuries, he does not complain. Actually, Vadym says that without sport he feels much worse and he only complains about the lack of time in the day.

Even though Vadym is very busy, he found time to share his expertise with crossfit newcomers and gave some advice.

1. CHOOSE A QUALIFIED COACH YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH

As for me, a coach is the most important factor. I believe that  a competent approach to training with a qualified coach with minimal equipment can yield a better result than training in a fully equipped crossfit gym, but with a person who is not qualified to train.

For example, I started CrossFit training at home and in the street. I needed barbell skills. Even though I had barbell at home, I couldn’t figure out weightlifting until I started training with a coach.

In general, I started my sports activity in freestyle wrestling.

And here is what I have to say, it is hard to find a coach like mine. Master of Sports Tarabara R.H. is the best example of a coach – he is just, patient, he knows when to yell and when to calm you down.

And the most important part is support! I am disgusted when I see coaches who tell their athletes that they won’t be able to do something or to achieve something.

2. CAREFULLY CHOOSE A TRAINING PLAN

Basically anyone can do crossfit, but it is important to carefully choose your training plan. It is important to understand your goals: do you want to improve your physical indicators, improve your body, win in the CROSSFIT GAMES or simply enjoy the company of like-minded people… It is up to you!

3. DEVELOP ENDURANCE

It is important to work on your endurance in order to ensure that your body has sufficient oxygen supply during the intensive workout. At the same time, you need to work on your technique.

4. WORK ON YOUR TECHNIQUE

First of all, you need to figure out the proper technique for the exercises, at first do the easy exercises that introduce more complex ones. However, there are exceptions when a person come to CrossFit from a different sport and is already prepared. In this case it would be easier to get a hang of more complex elements.

5. MAKE HASTE SLOWLY

Don’t go after the weights, proper technique should be your priority. That is how I train now and what I tell others. Many people want to have everything at the same time, However, guided by my experience, I sometimes limit the weight load for some people since you should do everything gradually, taking it one step at a time.

6. STUDY ABOUT CROSSFIT

There is lots of literature available now, read it, memorize it. Besides, when you write your training plan on a board, you will soon remember what all the abbreviations mean.

7. DO NOT OVERTRAIN

Pay special attention to you body’s reaction to training, do not overtrain yourself in pursuit of quick results.

8. AVOID INJURIES

To avoid injuries, you need to eat well, do proper warm-up, have adequate workload, train regularly and give yourself time to recover.

9. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

Even minor progress motivates you to keep on working and not only in crossfit. For example, I have a “self-control journal” where I record all of my daily trainings or days of rest.

Also CrossFit has benchmarks – different complexes performed all over the world. That is how you can track your progress and compare yourself to other athletes.

10. KEEP MOTIVATED

You need to enjoy what you are doing. It is possible when you are surrounded by like-minded people and set personal records.

For me personally, competition is the best motivation. Preparation for the competition motivates, disciplines and makes you go to the gym to make you better than you were yesterday.

You can get a good portion of motivation at the international tournament Kyiv Battle 2018, which will take place on February 3-4 at the exhibition center “ACCO International”.
